What to Pack

Here are a few Alaska-specific things that you might wish to procure and pack:
  • Rain gear: both jacket and pants. They should be made of coated nylon, with factory-sealed seams. Heavy rubberized rain gear is too heavy to be comfortable; plastic/vinyl rain suits & ponchos are not recommended as they tear easily.
  • Hiking boots or shoes: comfortable, lightweight, and water repellent. Make sure they are well broken in before we depart.
  • Day pack: large enough to hold rain gear, extra sweater, water bottle, lunch, binoculars, and anything else you would take on a day hike.
  • Sunglasses: In Denali, the sun will rise around 3:30 a.m. and not set until after midnight, so we'll get some sun!
  • Wool or synthetic fleece hat: or both, if you're lucky enough to get a Rybicki-issued lined cap.
  • Warm jacket/sweater/vest: synthetic fleece or wool are recommended.
  • Light gloves: wool or fleece work well.
  • Brimmed hat: for sun and rain protection.
  • Socks: wool or synthetic socks for hiking (cotton is not recommended).
  • Pants & long sleeve shirts: again, having a few non-cotton items is helpful as they are quick-drying. If you bring long underwear, choose synthetic fabrics such as polypropylene, capilene or thermax.
  • Swimsuit
  • Sports sandals
The common themes seem to be (1) layering & being ready for lots of different weather conditions, and (2) synthetic, quick-drying fabrics. For online shopping, you might try REI, LL Bean, or Patagonia. Weather in Alaska in June averages 40s for the low and 60s for the high.

For those in CR, the Great Outdoor Store had smartwool socks 50% off as of last week. Other warmer weather clothes are also on sale there.

Are there going to be any type of fundraising efforts (i.e. car wash, pop can drive, panhandling) to defray the costs of the items on this packing list?

...I meant cooler weather clothes, by the way.

Ryan, I think your fundraising idea is a good one. I appoint you chair of the effort.

As chair of the fundraising committee, I think that it is important for me to inform the group of our first donation to the fundraising campaign. Earlier this morning, I found $0.47 under the sofa. Later in morning, I was informed that this money had been generously donated by the Big Guy (a.k.a. Cecil) and the Burgerton (a.k.a. Simone).

As we launch our fundraising campaign with out first generous donation, remember, even the hospice house capital campaign had to start somewhere. Frankly as I see it, if the other pets in the Gullickson/Rybicki/Conway clan contribute to the cause, we may have enough to provide some wine and spirits on the flight north.

I am not quite sure how other fundraising chairs would close out their first fundraising communication but let me just end by saying this, "keep one eye to the sky and the other down low, for you may never know where the money may grow."

The "pet as fundraiser" angle is a whole new approach, unexplored as far as I can recall from my former occupation. This kind of creative thinking will get you far. Like to Alaska.
