Alaska Reading List

Here are a few Alaska-themed books to help you get into the traveling spirit.

Nonfiction:
Rowing to Latitude: Journeys Along the Arctic's Edge by Jill A. Fredston
Tundra Teacher: A Memoir by John Foley
The Thousand-Mile War: World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians by Brian Garfield
Into the Wild by John Krakauer
Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat (also a film)

Fiction:
Lost Angel by Mike Doogan
Highliners: The Classic Novel about the Commercial Fishermen of Alaska by William McCloskey
Alaska by James Michener

These authors were recommended for Alaska-mystery-beach reads:
Sue Henry
Kathryn Harrison
Dana Stabenow

Anyone have other recommendations?

Here's one source on good summer reading: NPR/Talk of the Nation's Summer Reading List.

Also, I found something fun: Literature Map. Warning: it's addictive.

Has anyone checked out any of these books yet? If so I'd be interested in borrowing -

If anyone is interested in some Alaska-related music, there's a fairly well-known composer named John Luther Adams who is based in Fairbanks. His stuff is evocative of the landscape: he refers to his work as "sonic geography." Really lovely stuff. Recommended titles include "In the White Silence" and "The Far Country," both available at amazon.com.

We have literature and music recommendations, but are there any Alaska-related movies that anyone would like to recommend for me to upload to my iPod?

BTW, if anyone is in need of non-Alaska-related reading, I will be carrying along some scintillating titles in preparation for my entrance exams (e.g. Introduction to Post-Tonal Theory, A Concise History of Western Music, A Practical Approach to 16th Century Counterpoint), any of which I may be willing to lend out for a small fee.

Luke, I'd be interested in the latter title regarding 16th century counterpoint, but just because it's practical.

Luke, "I really like where your head is at." Great fundraising idea.
